Alice in Wonderland Topsy Turvy Cake

This is my Alice in Wonderland Topsy Turvy cake. I first made 3 batches of cake batter: 2 chocolate and 1 vanilla. My pans were 10, and 6 and 4 inches. I made two cakes of the size 10 and another two of the size 6. Make sure to allow the pans to cool as this is very important. I cut the cakes on a sloped angle, and turned to create the desired pitches. This make take quite awhile and requires a steady hand as the cake crumbles easily. I iced the cake and inserted wooden dowels for structure soundness.

All of my fondant is hand made and consists of marshmallows and powdered sugar. Some had been applied with shortening to make it easy to roll out. To achieve a pleasing taste, I flavored the fondant with almond extract and then dyed to the desired color. I rolled out the fondant and covered the cakes using a smoothing cardboard sprayed with cooking spray.

All of the rest of the cake is decorated with cookie cutouts. Almond extract glues each layer together. I created a pearl dust to add shimmer while adjusting the amount to reflect more in certain areas. Also, a great trick for the powdered sugar left on the fondant is to steam with a steamer.

There you have it! This was done for a 14 year old birthday and she loved it and it tasted great!
