Crumb Coating: The Secret to Flawless Cake Decorating

When it comes to cakes, it seems that there are no limits as to how you want them to appear. Nowadays, cakes are more luxurious and extravagant in terms of style and according to a person’s preference. Though some people might like their cakes simple and of single layer, majority of people love multi-tiered cakes with lavish decorations.

If you are a baking expert, you would know that making use of expensive and over-the-top cake decorations and toppers is not enough. Frosting the cake is the first basic step that must be done in order to properly execute our cake decorating idea. Baking amateurs might think that frosting is easy but how does one deal with all the cake crumbs? Remember, no cake will look pretty with crumbs all over the frosting.

The solution to this cake decorating dilemma comes in two words: crumb coating. Crumb coating is actually a very useful trick that a baker can use to seal in the cake’s moisture as well as making it easier to decorate by sealing in those pesky crumbs. When crumb coating a cake, you can use buttercream icing or frosting. Place a dollop of icing on the cake and spread it on the entire cake. Make sure to cover the cake with THIN layer of icing all the way to your cake’s bottom. Allow the crumb coat to settle for about two hours before starting to decorate or frost it.

  1. I am anxious to try this new trick! You wonder sometimes why you don’t think of these things yourself, but that’s what makes me an amateur and definitely not a professional. I’m so glad I found this website with a video to help with a very tricky problem I have had. I have 4 big cakes coming in the next few weeks, so I’ll be trying it out very shortly. Thank you.
