Marine Corps Leather Boot Cake

This is a 2 tiered Marine Corps Leather Boot Cake. The bottom tier is a spice cake with cinnamon buttercream covered in almond flavored marshmallow fondant while the top tier is a red velvet cake with cream cheese buttercream and vanilla flavored marshmallow fondant.
The boots on top are hand molded from our of homemade modeling chocolate and then colored it tan to mimic the Marine Corps Leather boots. I made this cake with a digital pattern on the fondant by tinting each tier’s fondant into 3 shades of pink or brown. I used the medium shade as the base color and I hand cut digital shapes out of the medium and dark shades of each color.
I rolled out the base color and then laid the digital cutout pieces over it and rolled them into the base color to create the digital image. I didn’t anticipate the digital pieces to spread out so much. I was expecting it to be a tighter pattern. I finished the cake off by placing a camouflage rope around the base of each tier.
This cake was made for some Marines that I work with who have birthdays in the month of August. They are single Marines who live in the barracks and do not have family stationed here with them. So this cake is just a little reminder of home and to let them know they aren’t forgotten being stationed all the way over here in Okinawa. As a Marine myself I know that something like a beautiful and delicious cake can make a world of difference.
