Hi! I have been decorating cakes for about eight years now. I am self taught and feel that I should be much better than I am. I have taken two local Wilton classes (1 and 2). I am very seriously thinking of travelling from my home here in Canada to Darien, Illinois to the Wilton school to learn more. I have been trying to start a cake decorating business from my home because at the moment I am unable to work outside of the home. I have a small child that I would like to stay home with. I need some good ideas of how to advertise and gain more clientelle. I also need to earn some money so that I can go to the school. I calculate that it will cost me around $5000 to travel there myself since it will be about a six hour drive and a 2 week stay.(that’s American money) Can someone help me with different advertising ideas and money making ideas, PLEASE!)

The first thing would be to practice so that you are confident in your skills and can market a good product. Then you can begin to promote yourself within your community. If you can do wedding cakes, you might begin by finding several other small bridal vendors and asking them if they are interested in forming a little group to promote each other’s services. They can give out your cards to their customers and you give out theirs to yours. If you are not up to wedding cakes yet, you might try advertising at local party supply shops, etc. for birthdays and other occasions. Then be sure to ask your happy customers for referrals.
I’m sure school would be great if you can make it work. I’d love to do it myself.

well I think it’s a good idea if you want to take the classes i’m a beginner too and i have no clue how to start on this bussines o how much to charge for a cake
