Tarantula Birthday Cake

First Name: Tamara
City-State: Everett, WA

I enjoy making unique cakes for my family on their birthdays. I make 6 cakes a year for birthdays but have never taken a decorating class. This is a cake that I made for my youngest son who asked for a tarantula cake.

The base of the cake is a full sheet frosted in white with piped grey cobweb accents. The spider’s body and head were cut freehand from a second sheet cake, placed on top and frosted with chocolate.

The hairs on the spider’s legs were made with shredded coconut dusted with cocoa powder. The spider’s legs are made with Pepperidge Farm’s Pirouette cookie sticks. They were frosted with chocolate frosting, rolled into the dusted coconut, and pieced together with frosting as “glue” in the joints. The spider’s mouth is a cocoa dusted pecan and the eyes are cocoa dusted mini marshmallows.

The cake was a huge success and was one of my favorites! It could also be a great addition to a Halloween party.
